time to thank it up

It's an annual White House tradition for the President to pardon a turkey who was otherwise meant to be eaten. This lucky bird gets to live out his days at a turkey sanctuary (while another gets served in the White House dining room, of course). The pardoned turkey, other than being the focus of a press conference, is probably most grateful for the chance to live out his days, without stuffing and with his wishbone intact.

What I want to know, during this month of Thanksgiving, is what are you thankful for? Rather than the obvious, somewhat cliche answers involving family and friends, I encourage you to be a bit more thoughtful and creative--for example, name a specific friend or family member and write about why you're grateful they're in your life.

Or go a completely different route, and choose something that many of us may not have even realized was a blessing (such as object that makes your life easier). Whatever you mention, if you want to earn extra credit, be sure to explain why you are thankful.

Please come back periodically to read and comment on each others' posts. I hope these serve as positive reminders to us as we head into what can sometimes be a challenging time of year.

  1. I am thankful for my best friend Sam, Lauren, and Lace. Sam has been there with me through everything. She was always there for me, even when my grandpa had a stroke. Lacie and Lauren are both awesome friends too. They put up with all my crap, and help me understand things in school that I otherwise wouldn't understand. I really don't know what i would do without them.

  2. I'm thankful for my wonderful, incredible, truly amazing friends. To be specific, that would Katelyn S. and Lauren Hugie. I don't what I would do without them. They are always there for me; they stick up for me and are always willing to help in any matter. They make me a better person overall. Partly by informing me on dumb decisions before i make them, so that I don't end up doing something overtly stupid. My best friends are incredible people, and I am truly thankful to have them in my life.

  3. I am very grateful for seminary. I love to start my day by learning from the scriptures and being uplifted and put in a good mood the rest of the day. Although it is hard to get up extra early in the morning, seminary is usually the best part of my day. So, I am grateful for the opportunity to go attend seminary each morning.

  5. I'm thankful for deodorant. If I could go back in time and talk to someone, I'd thank whoever created it. There are so many people out there who just take deodorant in advantage, and I think we should take the time to be thankful for those who use it; not abuse it.
It saves us from the embarrassment of smelling like a rotten egg that has spent too much time in the sun, and I am very, very, very thankful for it!

  6. Thanksgiving this year happens to be the same day as my Birthday, but I'm not going to write about how I'm thankful for being born. Instead, my best-friend Coben is going through abdominal migrants, which is where his stomach has a migrant frequently. Migrants aren't always in the brain, but can also be in the stomach. Anyways, he's forced to missed school these last 4 years, only being able to come to school when he isn't vomiting or in pain. He hasn't found a cure or medication to help him, but he's mom has been trying hundreds of different treatments to just allow him to feel better for a day, or even a week at best. I am thankful that Coben has such a great mother, she is doing all that she can to make him feel better for a day, for a day he can feel normal, for a day he can go to school and learn.

  7. It doesn't take a hero to change lives, it just takes a good friend. To those who have bolstered me in my darkest times, when it seemed all was lost: thank you. I cannot stress how important you were to me, and still are. You are the most amazing people that I have ever known, and your friendship has not only helped me through those emotionally draining times, it has also helped me realize my real talent as an artist, my compassion for friends, and my overall thankfulness for you. A special thanks to Devin Dial, Laura Hartzell, and Nolan Gray.

  8. This thanksgiving I am especially thankful for Bradley Cooper. He always tells me Im ugly and that i have no friends. Its always enjoyable walking into the classroom and hearing those words spew out of his mouth. Also, we play golf alot. Even though he rarely can hit it straight off the tee, its fun to not be alone out on the course. You never know what can happen on a golf course. Lastly, Bradley is a great guy because I get extra credit for writing about him. So yeah.

  9. I, as others, am thankful for having so many great people around me that inspire me to do my best in all that I do. One person I find truly inspiring is one of my best friends, Amby. She has been through a whole load of things with me in the amount of time we've been friends. She encourages me to make good decisions and helps me think of what my future would potentially turn out to be if I make a stupid decision. Another best friend, Melody Smith, has been by my side since I moved to Keizer in third grade. She has been through everything with me. She knows me better than almost anyone I know. She is with me through all my achievements and failures. She's always there for me when I need someone to talk to and she is good at being logical. Jenni, my third best friend (yes, I have a few), is also one that is always there. She's like a sister to me. From heavy emotional moments to bouncing off the walls together, she's always there. I'm also thankful for my boyfriend. We've been together for over a year now, and he's so understanding, it's amazing! He always listens to my side of the story before he judges whether or not I made a right decision. He's always there for me when I need a shoulder to cry on or a big, bear hug. I am thankful for many other people in my life, but that'd take a lot of writing. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I am thankful for all the true, inspirational friends in my life that I never want to let go of.

  10. I am very thankful for many things. This Thanksgiving in particular, I am thankful for happiness. I am always very happy, partially because I have chosen happiness, which has made all the differance in my life. My motto is why be sad, when you can choose to be happy. I am truly thankful for happiness this year. Among other things, I am also very thankful for my friends and family. Without my friends and family, I probably wouldn't be as happy as I am. This thanksgiving I can honestly say I am thankful for happiness.

  11. I'm thankful for so many things in my life. One is for growing up in the same Christian private school up until the 8th grade. I had to transfer to a public school and it made me sad at first, but now I'm actually thankful that I switched too because I've met so many amazing new people and got to have a lot more great experiences because of it!

  12. This Thanksgiving I am truely thankful for my mom. Since my dad died she has had to deal with a lot and raise my sister and I on her own. She managed to stay strong and does everything in her power to make sure me and my sister have the best life possible. I am also thankful for my really close friends( you know who you are). These people always managed to make me laugh and smile even when I am upset. Oh, and I am thankful for icecream. I want to go back in time and meet the person you invented it and say "Thank You!" These things are what i am most thankful for.

  14. There are many things to be thankful for, but I am defiantly most thankful for my mom. There are an uncountable amount of things she does for me. The most noticeable is the breakfast that is prepared when I get up, sometimes 20 minutes before I have to leave for school. Today, however, my mom was down with pains and was unable to make a breakfast. That didn't mean she had nothing for us to eat. There still was plenty of good bread and jam to go around. Even when she is unable to make the common, and now nearly expected, hot breakfast, she still has a decent meal waiting for me.

  15. I am thankful for a lot of things, but the person I am most thankful for is my boyfriend Chance. I have known him for my whole life, his mom is my mom's best friend, which makes him always being around even better. If I ever need someone to complain to or angrily rant to he's always there. Also without him I would stress constantly about my school work. He's also a great person; always caring and worrying about others' feelings. I'm thankful I have someone in my life to help me.

  16. There is one thing I am incredibly grateful for and that one thing is music. Music is always there for you and can make you feel better instantly. Without music my life would nothing! Some people take music for granted or don't take the time to appreciate the lyrics when the lyrics are the most important part! Music fuels many holidays too. Imagine Christmas without Christmas music, it just wouldn't be the same! I'm thankful for music and you should be too because it's the greatest thing ever.

  18. This Thanksgiving I am extremely thankful for my supportive family and friends, and my health. In the past two years I've gone through countless treatments and two very painful, major surgeries on my stomach. I have an incurable disease and after a total of three surgeries, the first one being an emergency one, I am so thankful for where I am currently. Having these health issues these past years has been very hard on my family and me. After my first surgery the doctors told me my life would never be the same, and I can truly say it hasn't been. Its been hard, but in all, I am thankful for all the pain. All the trauma has made me a stronger person as a whole. Also during these tough times I learned who my true friends were. I am so very thankful for the support my family and friends have given me and it truly means the world to me. This Thanksgiving I am thankful for finally being healthy and having my family and friends help!

  19. The thing I believe I am most thankful for is the fact that my two sisters will come home from college for the holiday. I haven't seen much of them and its been kinda boring around the house because of that. They were kinda my "go to" people whenever i was bored so I've been feeling kinda lost. When they do come back though I'll be sure to make up for all that lost time. I'm looking forward to hanging out with them and sharing some good times...and turkey.

  20. I am extremely thankful for my mom and dad. They have provided me with everything I have ever needed. They are the best parents I could ever ask for. My parents have always been there for me for whatever reason, even the ridiculous reasons. Also, I am very thankful for my best friends. Brooklyn, Fallon, Amelia, and Jasmine have been through a lot with me. I can tell them anything. I am so thankful I have friends that love and trust me, as much as I trust them. I am so thankful for when I can make people laugh. It makes me feel amazing, knowing that I put a smile on their face. It makes me feel good when people make me laugh, even when I don't want to smile. So I figured I'm doing the same thing. Plus, I think I am very funny (or so I've been told). I am so thankful for being healthy. I've had issues in the past. And I pray that my deda (grandpa) is going to be okay. He is going to spend thanksgiving with us. I'm so excited!!!

  23. I know this might be very cliche, but I am very thankful for my family. My two best friends happen to be apart of it. My dear mama and big sista! Whenever I need someone to comfort me, I go to my mom. When I need to vent, or talk smack about someone, I go to my big sister. I am also thankful for my Padre, who kills all those nasty, horrid, and creepy spiders attempting to bite me. Im thankful for all those times he unclogged the shower drain in our bathroom, for all the light bulbs he has changed, but most importantly Im thankful for his protection and advice. Another thing Im thankful for is my lovely church, whos members are like family to me. Im thankful for being able to practice my beleifs freely, for being physically healthy, for being able to breath by myself. I could keep going, but Im afraid there is to much to say! So I'll end by saying another cliche statment: Im thankful for my God, my Family,my Friends and my Life!

  24. This thanksgiving I'm most thankful for my grandparents. A lot of my friends don't have them anymore so I feel really lucky to have such great ones. I don't see them very often, but when I do, I'm so happy. They're your stereotypical grandparents who bring you candy and spoil you. I'm also thankful for my big brother, Carl. He picks on me, calls me names, and fights with me but he's also one of the only people who truly understand me. We were born 364 days apart. The technical term for that is irish twins according to google. Even though half the time we don't get along, we always have each other's backs no matter what. Lastly, I'm thankful for my best friend, Cambria. She's had a rough time these past few years with rumors and girl drama. Although she's made some mistakes, I won't let that ruin our friendship because everyone needs at least on person they can turn to, right?

Whenever I need someone to make me laugh or just to eat ice cream and watch reruns of The Office with, he's always there for me. I'm also so so so thankful for my two older sisters, Nichole and Andrea. I'm so grateful for my sister, Nichole, for always being there for me to talk to, whether I need to talk crap about someone or help with my homework. I'm thankful for Andrea for always spoiling with me and still talking to me even though she's married and lives in Utah now. And of course, I'm thankful for my parents. They spoil me (What can I say, I'm the baby of the family!), love me, feed me, and give me a house to live in. I'm thankful for my mom for loving me, and watching movies with me, and being there when I need to talk. I'm thankful for my dad for making me laugh and cleaning my bathroom! So basically, I love my family tons and I don't know where I would be without them!!

There is someone that I am VERY thankful for though, and it's my best friend Lauren Loosli. Our relationship can't really be described as bff's, it's more like soul sisters. Best friends come and go, but I know that our friendship is forever. She makes me a better person, and I feel more sure of myself when she's around. We can always tell when the other is upset or if they are bursting with information. She's always there for me, and I'm always there for her. It's like we can read each others minds ALL THE TIME. With everything that has gone on these past few years, I have learned that nobody is guaranteed tomorrow, and you need to live everyday like it's your last. With the recent death of my Grandpa, I have realized who my real friends are and how thankful I am for my family. They have all been by my side and whenever I need to talk, they are here for me one hundred percent. Thanksgiving is going to be weird without my Grandpa being here, but I am excited to be at the beach with all of my family members in one place. 32. I'm very thankful for the people in my life that challenge me to better myself every day. My friends and family have been huge impacts in my life and I'm glad they thrive for my success. Another thing I'm thankful for is the freedom and rights I have in this country as a woman and an American. I am privileged to be a Christian and attend church; while in other countries that right might be taken away. As well as many other things I'm thankful for, I happen to be especially thankful for my mom-she's basically a super-hero. Ever since my Dad passed away eight years ago, she's pulled double duty; picking up every mess my brothers, sister, and I make, taking care of us when we're sick, and most importantly dealing with my teenage girl attitude. I certainly couldn't do it if I were her. My life is filled with blessings, and continually being blessed in new ways every day.

  33. I have never been as thankful for my dad as I am at this point in my life. I act like a total brat toward him, but as I reflect on how much my dad is there for me, I realize I take him for granted. There isn't a day that goes by without him telling me how proud he is of me and how much he loves me. When there's is no one else to talk to, he is always a call away, and no matter how busy he is, he stops whatever he is doing to listen to me in times of need. He evens drives me to any destination I desire without a single complaint. I may not tell him as often as I should, but I'm grateful to have a father who cares for me so deeply and would drop everything to make me happy. Many people don't have the privilege of having a dad like mine, so I should take the time to appreciate the time I have with my dad. Thinking about life without my dad is nearly impossible for me; I choke up just thinking about that. So for always making me feels special and being there for me through anything, I am forever thankful this thanksgiving for my dad.

Many people may not know, but there are a lot of people that can't read or write that are desperate to learn! Reading and writing definitely makes everyones life easier. It allows us to find things, go places, communicate with people, learn new things, and teach new things. I think many people forget that this is a skill that has to be taught, it can't just be learned. I'm glad for all the teachers I have had that have patiently taught me to master this ability; if it wasn't for them, I wouldn't be typing this right now :)

  36. Growing up, I was always at church every Sunday and was taught my beliefs and how lucky I was to be able to have those and not be punished for it like some people in other countries. When I was in middle school I stopped going to church a lot and I started to take for granted that I had the ability to be able to express my religion in America freely when some people will never have the chance to even know about different religions and have the freedom to do a lot of things. Lately I have been thinking a lot about this and I'm so lucky that I am able to live somewhere that religion isn't really frowned upon and that it's allowed to believe what you want and not have certain beliefs be a requirement to governments. 41. At this time I am very thankful for my sister. About two weeks ago, my sister was hit by a car who ran a red light. It was her turn to go but the 84 year old man accidently kept driving. She flew 25 feet in the air, breaking her leg and shoulder, and suffering a large concussion. She is doing much better now and is in rehab at this time. I am thankful because we just learned that she will be able to come home on thanksgiving day and have dinner with us. Although she will have to sit on the couch with me while the rest of the guests will sit at the dinner table. My sister has always been a big part of my life. Although she refuses to help me with my school work because she "can't remember what to do". Nor will my father, who is attending Chemeketa, help me with my sophomore level algebra. The Animal Hospital gives me the opportunity to be a better person. I can challenge myself more by having an organized schedule of when to study and when to work. At this time of year things aren't going well economically at my house so it feels good to have my own money to support myself and that my parents would have to worry less for me. Even though I'm thankful for many other things like my family and friends, something I'm thankful for this year is having a job.

  46. I am thankful for trials. Trials are what makes us who we are and I would not be the person I am today if not for them. One trial I am particularly thankful for was just this fall, during football season, when I had to fight every week for the starting position. I had never really been challenged for a starting spot before and that was very humbling. I came out of that experience knowing I had to compete every day and work as hard as I could to get better. This experience also applies to other areas as well. Such as school and trying my hardest to have good grades. It also applies to music and trying every day to learn something new and work hard to master it. This might be a little unusual to say this, but I am most thankful for the bad things in life. They make us a better person, and that's what really matters.

  47. When I think of what I'm thankful for, I think of my parents who love and care for me even when I have a bad attitude. They provide me with a roof over my head that keeps me dry and warm. They also buy and give me food to eat. I'm also thankful that they have given me a car to drive. I know some kids can't have the luxury, so I know I and blessed to have parents who can give me that. I know my parents try their best to be the good parents which I am very thankful for.

  48. My cousins came for thanksgiving and I started thinking about how my family has a great sense of humor. We all think the same things are funny and pester each other about silly things that make every one laugh. Some times the laughing gets so out of hand we cant stop. When this happens we call them laugh attacks. This is not something I have thought about before but this is something I am very thankful for.

  49. Something I am truly grateful for is the opportunities I have in my life. By this I am referring to the simple, overlooked blessings such as being able to see, hear, smell, taste, touch, talk and even walk. These are all things that many of us can do and they are truly gifts. Without these, many doors would be closed to me, so I am glad to have my good health. Sometimes it is the small things that deserve the most gratitude.

  50. I am grateful for extra credit. Although it is not always on the top of my to-do list, I'm grateful for what it has don't for me in the past. In middle school I made the mistake of procrastinating and did make up work in time. My teacher then handed me a extra credit paper and said "good luck." I then went home and did the extra credit. This assignment is what determined if I would have an A or not. I got full credit on the assignment and got the A I was looking for! I know I wrote this a little late but, I meant to do it last week but did not have access to a computer until today when I got home from a computer. Since you are the best, coolest, kindest, awesomest, and the home run of an English teacher, I hope you accept my apology and my extra credit blog. Please :)
