give it up

"We make a living by what we get; we make a life by what we give."
-Winston Churchill

I would give to Heifer International.
Spread some generous ideas around this holiday season by telling us who you would donate your money or time to if you could (or perhaps you already do)!

[1] Name an organization,
[2] include a web address,
[3] tell us who they are/what they do, and
[4] explain why their cause is significant to you.
[5] Finally, if you want extra credit, choose an organization that has not already been posted by another student. That's right: you will need to read what your peers wrote, and the earlier you post, the easier your task.

If your ideal organization has been "claimed," check out some Nonprofit Organizations or this Charity Navigator for ideas. Oh--and if you've got a little to spare this season, consider following through on your recommendation or making a donation in a loved one's name as a gift!

  1. The organization I would donate to if I could would be the Make A Wish Foundation. They raise money so people with life threatening illnesses can meet there hero. Mainly famous people they look up to and idalize. I think this is significant to me because I know people who have life threatening illnesses and i would want them to be able to meet there favorite person before they die. If they die.

  2. The American Cancer association is my organization of choice. American Cancer Association is a organization that wants to "save the birthdays". What they mean by save the birthdays is to help cancer patients fight their diseases by giving them money for treatment. Plus, they want to, not only help the patients, but also want to understand cancer more, like the causes for one example, then be able determine the risks in someone getting cancer, and to ultimately eliminate cancer so for the rest of forever. This organization is significant to me because I know tons of people who have been diagnosed or lost there fight to cancer, one being my grandma. This organization also gives me hope knowing they want to end it and are taking action trying to find the risks so people can be sure not to be in the "risky stage" of possibly getting cancer. The website for American cancer association is www.cancer.org

  4. The Share Our Strength's No Kid Hungry campaign would be my choice to donate to because they feed children in America that needs food. The Share Our Strength is a national non-profit organization that gives money to other non-profit organizations with the same goal of feeding the children. This organization has feed thousands of children, and to me this is important because they will be the ones running the country in the future. In addition, the organization is helping the people in our country and not some other country which is why I support it. I believe that a person must help oneself before being able to help others which is the same with US. Many kids in America starve, and we should try to help the one in arms distance first, not the ones that are hundreds of miles away. Share Our Strength recognizes the problems we have here and is doing their best to make sure that children don't have to worry about when they will have their next meal.

  5. The organization I would donate to is the Relay for Life foundations. There has been many incidences where Relay for life has saved lives. Relay for life both raises money for research and brings awareness of cancer. It doesn't matter what kind of cancer it is they help it all.In my experience I have seen cancer and how it affects families. It's horrible. The Relay for life foundation has been able to take away that horrible thing from families and save lives. With that, in order for them to continue that they need funding. That is one reason I'm glad to donate my money. Another reason is my family has donated and devoted time to it before. We helped at the Relay for Life event in Woodburn multiple times and were able to benefit those families who need it. Over all I'm glad that there is an organization like this that I can donate my money to.

  6. If I were to ever donate to the a specific organization, I would donate to Stand Up To Cancer. Stand Up To Cancer is a organization that helps fight against cancer, trying to find a cure for all the possible cancer patients in the world, and is a non-profit donation center. They spend 100% of the money you donate into researchers and try to find a cure for cancer. They're doing this because so many people aorund the U.S. have cancer and suffer every day, 33% of infected cancer pateints die. This year alone, approximately 1.63 Mil people were diganosed with cancer of some kind, and 572,000 of those patients died. Stand Up To Cancer wants to be able to reduce that 572,000 to 0. Stand Up To Cancer has already raised $161 Million dollors sense 2008, and are getting closer everyday to finding a cure to cancer.

  7. The organization I would donate my money or time would be the Boys and Girls Club of Salem. They help teens in the area have somewhere to go during summer for only $5. There are games to play there such as pool, foosball, or even some board games. The price is so cheap because they want everyone to have the oppurtunity to go and get some food and play with new friends that they can make. Since its very reasonable, they could use some money to help pay for all the expenses that they have such as employees and electrical bills. To conclude, The Boys and Girls Club is a great organization that'd I would love to donate money to.

  8. The organization I would give money and time to is the Humane Society. The Human Society takes in stray animals and puts them up for adoption to try to find them a home. Not only are the animals from the Human Society friendly, but they are nutored and healthy too. The Humane Society also helps prevent animal cruelty, and in order to do that they need law enforcement and money to help animals in need. The Human Society could used extra money or help for the housing and grooming of the animals. Animals are expensive to keep and a whole shelter full of hungry pets is quite spendy.

  10. The organization I were to donate money this holiday season would have to be the "Make It Better Foundation." The Make It Better Foundation is a program created by the Portland Trail Blazers to make an effort and grant funds to make the community a better place for children to live, learn (education), and play. This is significant to me because Basketball is one of many passions I have and is great to see that a local team is helping out to the community and give back.

  11. If I were to make a donation to any organization, I would choose the Alzheimer's Foundation of America. This is a great foundation that provides care and services to individuals facing dementia and their family. My grandfather was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in 2004 and recently passed away on Monday, November 25th. The care he received in the last few weeks of his life was incredible. My donation to this organization would benefit those all over the nation experiencing the same things that my family did. Donations to this foundation is put towards helping families in need, medical research, and finding a cure.

  12. If I were to donate to an organization, I would choose the Autism Speaks Foundation. This non profit organization is dedicated to funding research of autism, and continues to be the world's leading science and advocacy organization. Their research includes searching for the causes, prevention, treatment, and cure for autism. The Autism Speaks Foundation is significant in my life, because I have two siblings, a grandfather, an aunt, and several ancestors with autism. My life has been affected by autism because of those around me that have it. I hope that this organization will be able to find success as they increase awareness in autism and expand the amount of research being done. To contribute to their advancements, I would gladly donate to the Autism Speaks Foundation.

United Nations Childrens Fund is a non profit organization that helps child survival and development as well as the protection of children. It was created to provide emergancy food and health care to children of many countries. I would donate to this foundation because there are many children in other countries that do not have access to a ton of food or heath care like we do in America. 14. The organization that I would donate to is the Children's Cancer Association. They provide support and medical care for children in Oregon and Washington who are seriously ill with cancer They use a lot of music to help them be happy and they do a fantastic job at helping the child forget the trouble/hard times for a while and letting them have fun. I would donate because so many children suffer from the horrible effects of cancer and I feel bad for the parents who lose their child because of cancer. THey help many, many children every year and just a small amount of money helps them out.

  16. One of the many organizations that I would invest or donate money to would be Willamette Valley Hospice. WVH is a non-profit oragnization that helps families with dying loved ones or individuals with terminal illnesses to make the last few weeks or months the most comfortable as possible for the one who's passing. The mission of WVH is to provide comprehensive hospice care services, grief services, pain management, and support for patients and families that are facing serious or life-limiting illness. The reason why I would dontate to this cause is because Willamette Valley Hospice helped my family and my grandmother with caring for my grandfather when he passed away last spring. We were thankful to this service because it ensured grandpa's comfort for his last months, and since it was non-profit, it was great for financial reasons as well. I'm grateful to this organization and what it does.

  17. The Charity/Organization that I would love to donate to is Mercy Ships. They are an organization run by doctors that goes to Africa to give poor children and people there a chance to have diseases cured and surgeries that they can't afford or get there. Most children there don't even get basic health care there because it's a very poor country and things like lack of food, dirty water, heat, and low sanitation contribute greatly to bad health and many diseases. The goal of Mercy Ships is to give the children of Africa a chance to heal, live a healthy life, and just give them basic immunizations so they can live long, healthy lives. I like this organization a lot because I think that in the US we take our doctors and chance to live very healthy and clean lives for granted so I think this really opens out eyes into other people's worlds.

This Non-profit organization helps save the lives of malnutrition children and providing clean water for communities to have access to. Also they try to find solution to stop hunger by showing them how to farm,ect... The reason I would pick this cause is because no one should have to be hungry. Diseases and health problems sometimes can't be help ,but hunger can be. Someone being hungry or going hungry is much easier to fix. Food is all over the world and it can be grown so this is why I think this problem is so important. Also i know what it is like to not have very much food.

They study such topics as childhood obesity and behavioral problems, adult chronic physical illness, substance use and abuse, adolescent depression, and eating disorders. 20. I would donate to the Children's Defense Fund (http://www.childrensdefense.org/) because they want children to have a good start in life; they want children to be able to learn in schools, to be protected, and not to fear others because of the threats our country faces. So many kids are killed; almost 3 every day, and so many more are wounded; up to 1 every 30 minutes, that I'm surprised our country can still provide for itself, even though many other places cannot. This charity has worked tirelessly for 40 years so that children may have a "level playing field". They have policies and programs that lift children out of poverty; protect them from abuse and neglect; and ensure their access to health care and quality education. I commend this organization and hope that one day, we can bring all of our nations children out of the depths and into happier circumstances.

  21. I love my pet, which is why I'm so grateful to SFOF, Salem Friends of Felines, for helping me to find my cat Jasper. SFOF is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping cats and kittens find new homes. They operate a thrift store in the front of their shelter to help raise funds. Salem Friends of Felines is currently home to around 180 cats and/or kittens, and they take care of all of them. Even though this animal shelter only caters to cats, they do a lot. They take in all kinds of cats, and care for them. They keep them from starving on the streets, and give them a nice environment to live in. SFOF adopts out cats and kittens, and those animals make a wonderful impact on families, I would know.Animals are neglected, and unfortunately that won't end any time soon. That's why SFOF, and places like it, are so important.

It causes mucus to build up in the lungs and causes you to get sick easily. When you get sick, most of the time you end up in the hospital because the mucus in your lungs builds up too much.

The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation accepts donations, and is the largest foundation working to find a cure for CF or to simply improve living conditions for those with the disease. My sister's friends are very dear to my family, and their CF is debilitating at times, and I really want them to be able to live someday without having to worry about getting sick easily or ending up in the hospital.

There are many reasons why i would want to help out this organization, but the significant reason is cause of my grandma. Because my parents were too busy with work to take care of me and my sibling back then, my grandma raised and nurtured us. Later on in life, when we could take care of ourselves, she moved into a retirement home. About 2 months ago, she past away in one by old age. Save the Children Foundation gives children of the United States and others from all around the world a healthy start, more learning opportunities, and provides protection from anything that could harm them. You could help this foundation by donating less then a dollar a day and it would go toward their providing food for them and their family, health care, education, and so much more. This foundation is significant to me because my cousin Fidel came from Africa when he turned 18. Neurofibromatosis is a type of tumor that some peoples bodies can’t fight off. If you have Neurofibromatosis you are prone to getting more tumors because the body can’t fight them off. The reason I would donate to this organization is because my sister’s best friend’s little sister has Neurofibromatosis. She is in the 5th grade and has already gone through Chemotherapy three times in her short 10 year life. Her body cannot resist the tumors. Teen Challenge is a christian based organization that helps people with drug abuse and addiction. All ages are welcome. The reason I would donate money to this organization is because a few years ago, my cousin became dangerously addicted to drugs and alcohol. She went to a College party and guess what happened. She had an amazing life. Her parents gave her whatever she wanted, she got to go to the college she wanted, she always had a boyfriend, but she threw it all away for drugs. Our family felt we couldn't trust her and we knew she would do anything just for her next fix. On Christmas she was throwing up and didn't look like herself at all.
