January 1, 2014

word, yo

It's a new year! For those of us who are human, that means we have improvements (perhaps major, but maybe just some fine-tuning) that we could make about ourselves and our lives. I'm curious about your resolutions, but I'm picky about the format: come up with a New Year's resolution and condense it to just ONE WORD that you'll remember. Then, give a detailed explanation why you selected that word to represent what you want to work on in 2014.

Sign your post with your first name, last initial, and period #. Deadline for this post (because of semester's end) is Jan. 24 at midnight.

Here's mine as an example:
Stride--I'm choosing "stride" this year to remind me to take whatever comes in stride. This applies to a few areas of my life, but most of it's centered around having another baby. I know that will drastically change our lives, our space, and our schedules at home, but I also know it's doable--so I need to take it in stride. The next four months at work will be very stressful given several changes I'll have to institute in my planning, teaching, and assessment; in addition, I'll be preparing materials for a substitute, which is a huge amount of work. Taking these challenges in stride means not letting stress rule over my attitude or my health; instead, I'll focus on small pieces that I can accomplish and perhaps ask for some help with the rest.

  1. The word I pick is events. I picked this word because this year I want to make things happen. I want to get out of the house more and have more things to do. Maybe just hang out with friends more. In 2013 I stayed home and watched a lot of netflix. I want this year to be different so instead of sitting at home I will be making memories and having a good time.

  2. Preparation-- I chose preparation because I need to be prepared when it comes to academic schoolwork, music, and further education. I need to be prepared for the dreaded AP classes so they aren't so dreadful and I can stay on top of junior year. I also need to make sure I keep up with my homework habits so I am prepared for more rigorous classes. When it comes to music, I need to decide what specifically I want to do when I go to college so I can do more activities that would be similar to what I would do there. I think I can be the most productive this year by looking ahead and preparing for what I see in the future.

  4. anticipation - I tried to think of an antonym for procrastination, and this is the best word I came up with. Although I have been able to get everything done on time in the past, I know that I need to develop better study habits. I want to be able to get into a great university or college, so I need to show that I can work hard. I need to show that I can and will go above and beyond the rock bottom requirements.

  5. Myself- I chose this word for various reasons. In the past I've always chosen to put myself last with everything and I mean everything. I've always thought that I need to make sure others are happy before I please myself. Therefore, I want to choose what makes me happy first and not let others opinions matter. On the other hand, I chose this word because I want to stay true to myself. I have life plans and I know what needs to be done in order to accomplish them. As I look around at the society we live in, things are changing everyday from the people to the activites and so I just want to make sure that no matter how much things change, I will remain myself. After all I am proud of who I am becoming and I want to make sure that nothing changes that. Brianna Koch Period 2

  6. Relax is the word that I choose to represent my new year's resolution. I always try to keep my life super busy and try to squeeze in too much at a time. This year I want to not take too much on that I can handle, and just slow down and enjoy the little things. I think a lot of the time we're all too busy running around and sucked into our technology that we miss lot of wonderful things in life, and we can forget to be thankful for what we have. So, this year I want to relax and be able to enjoy and do things that I've never had the time to do, and take the time to just relax.

  7. Anything. My word for the year is anything. I have chosen this word because I know that anything could happen throughout the year, good or bad it's up to me to choose how I will react to it. In the past few years my resolutions have been related to forgetting my past and moving on with the future. Truly anything can happen this year, and out of this year, I want to do anything I can to make it the best year possible for me.

  8. The word that would be the best fit would be Effort. It is for many reasons, for it applies to all instances is my life whether it be academic or athletics. Schoolwise, I need to do a better job of preparing for tests. Doing that is giving effort. Another way to bring effort is to turn all of my assignments in on time. I really struggled with that this last year. If I just improve my effort than getting strait A's shouldn't be a problem. The sad part is it might already be too late. The second half of it is that I need to give a stronger effort in my sports practices. Its not so much the lack of it, but it's the consistancy. I trouble with always trying my hardest with everydrill or every work out, everyday. In the past I might of just not felt the best, or had my mind on other things, but those are just excuses holding me back. If I can just focus on my effort I believe 2014 will reward me for it.

  9. The word I chose is concentration. I know that I need to get my thoughts straight and concentrate on school work and family. A lot of teens our age focus on relationships, drama, and social media. This year I am going to work really hard on getting good grades in my classes and spending time with my family instead of constantly being on my phone or computer. Grades and school will get me money so I can graduate college with the least amount of debt as possible. This year needs to be a good and successful year for th right reasons.

  10. Motivation.
I chose this word because the last couple weeks before break, I had to fight myself to get out of bed. I would come to school in my pajamas and throw my hair into a messy bun. I want to look nice everyday. Nice enough that if the President walked in, I wouldn't be trying to hide in the back. I know I will have an occasional lazy day, but I'll use my motivation to make it only twice a month instead of three times a week. Motivation is something I know I lack, so I'll give myself a kick in the pants to get some.

I chose this word because I want to do a lot of stuff this year. Last year I was just being lazy and I'd put things off, or never get to them. This year I have a many goals I want to complete, and things I want to do. I want to focus more on school, get more active, spend more time with my family, and much more. I'd really like to make all of this happen.

  13. God---I know, that's really a name, but to me, it's a word that inspires such a deep resonance within my soul. This year, I'm looking to build my relationship with God from the ground up. As cliché as that sounds, I've never felt the need to be with Him and follow Him more than now. As I go through this year, I'm going to look to Him when things get hard. In the past, I've looked to things that are debilitating. I'm going to build my relationship so that when the hard times come, I have the peace that He provides.

This year I really want to change by keeping dedicated to getting a job, school work, and friend ships.

  16. The word I would choose is study. I am a procrastinator in every sense of the word. If I want to study I will always put it off till the last minute. This year I want to fix that. 20. Responsible-- I chose this word for my new year's resolution because this year, I need to take control of my life and decisions for a successful future. Being responsible means doing what I should be doing like completing my assignments given during the break. Although I am a severe procrastinator, I think setting my goals to be a little bit more responsible will help me prioritize and know what I need to do in order for me to have a successful career in the near future... Really, it just mostly to stop my procrastination. ..Hopefully.

My goal for the brand new year to is work on the way I perceive myself. Through middle school I struggled with my weight very badly, and it became an issue that needed tackling. With the support of my loving friends, I've greatly improved. I want to continue my strive for a healthier body though. I want to learn to love my body the way it is and stop harming it. With the continuous help of the others around me I hope to reach a point where I honestly love the way I look. This is a fresh start and I want to make the absolute best of it. My goal is to improve my self-image and learn to love myself again.

  27. My word for 2014 is happiness. 2013 has brought so many challenges into my life, and I'm just so tired of sitting around and feeling sorry for myself when there are so many different things that I could be doing to better my life, my peers lives, and my own general thought process. By the time 2015 rolls around and I'm going into my junior year of high school, I want to know that I controlled the challenges in my life and I broke past them and became what every person truly wants to be-- genuinely happy. Maybe it won't be easy. But I can get there.

  31. Time - Every year technology allows people to do more than they had ever thought was possible. I will use my time more wisely on the important things instead of wasting time doing time-wasting activities such as video games or watching a lot of TV. 34. Dedication. I choose this word to sum up my New Year's resolution because I've realized that I need to be more dedicated to my music. Dedication is not only joining more and more bands to play in, but it's also practicing the music I have and loving what I do. In past years, I've gotten by with hardly any practicing of my music; this year is different. I know now that because of the more effort I put into my work, I will be rewarded more by the greater outcome and enjoy playing more. 36. One word to describe my New Year's resolution is "service." Service includes helping others, loving them, and being selfless. Throughout my life I've always been taught that serving others brings you the most happiness and I believe that to be true. Recently, my mom was admitted to the hospital and ended up having brain surgery. This was a difficult trial in my life but was much easier due to the overwhelming amount of help my family received from our friends and neighbors. Their service made me realize that I need to start thinking of the people around me and how I can help them. Going out of my way to help others in need might seem time consuming in the midst of my busy life, but I know that it will bring the most happiness to myself and the people I serve.

  37. For this New Years my word would be effort! I chose this word because I tend to not give 100% effort all the time because I'm used to a lot of things just being really easy for me. For example, I'm used to always having very good grades and always being at a higher level on a lot of things than most people. Now my effort has come back around and has hit me on the head and now I'm the one struggling with what seems like everything I thought I was good at! I want to focus on the effort that I give on things and not just expect things to come to me but work hard for things that I want to achieve so that in the end I will appreciate and enjoy my results more.

  39. This New Year, I would like to do the things I do in sincerity and a good attitude. In other words, I would like to be Wholehearted. (Yes it’s a word! I looked it up!) I would like to finish things, and get them done efficiently; putting my whole heart into the tasks I take up this year. Many times I find myself doing things just to get them done, not putting any care into them. Just to finish, or to say “Yeah, I’ve done that”. I really would like to follow through with this, but I haven’t made it a resolution. I am really bad at keeping New Years resolutions, so I stopped making them. 41. Positive.

For me, I've always thought that the mind is the most powerful thing that can control most aspects of your life. Whenever things get bad, I used to tell myself to have PMA, or to have a positive mental attitude. However over some time that idea went away in some parts of me. That is what I want to bring back into my life, into my schooling, my family life, and into my life with my friends this year. There are 10 keys to PMA that I have posted in my room, but there a few specific ones I’d like to point out that, I feel, I need to remember most.
First, I want to keep my mind on the things I want and not let my mind wander away from them. Secondly, I want to focus on sharing the good parts of me with others and not bring others down because I’m having a bad day. Last, I want to work on becoming a good finder in others; meaning that I look for the good in others and not the flaws. Being a human, I admit that some of these things get hard when other people don’t make an effort to focus off of themselves. However if I say positive in the worst of situations, I just feel more confident in my ability to be able to stay positive throughout day to day life.

  42. For this New Years, my resolution for this year is to become more courageous. The reason why I want to become more bold and confident in myself is because all my life, I was a bit of a shy person. Although, I'm not good at keeping my word, but I'll try my best to keep this one. In the past, I've let fear keep me from my goals and short-cut my achievements. 43. Health- My New Years resolution can be summurized down to "better health" because in year 2014 I plan to stop eatting at all fast food resturants, and no more junk food (Chips, Chocolate, Ice Cream, Soda, and etc.) I've tried hading no soda for a 3months during the summer, and I found that friends make it super difficult to resit. I do fine with people drinking and eatting junk food in front of me, but its when I am hungry and I'm with friends when they stop at McDonalds to get something to eat, that makes it difficult to avoid fast food. So far, I've tried to carrying a protein bar with me where ever I go so that when I get hungry that I don't have the urge to eat fast food. My long term goal is to reduce the amount of fat in my body and to gain more muscle, while gaining 15lbs before summer.

Needless to say, I could be doing better than I currently am. improving me focus in academics will hopefully reduce stress or worries about things I shouldn't be worrying about if I just listened in the first place. focusing in also on the things that actually matter and will have an affect on my life, rather than twitter, instagram, facebook, etc.

Faith, the one word that actually represents my new years resolution. Faith wasn't always something I had nor was it something i took seriously. I always had trouble focusing and understanding my religion and the one thing i didn't understand was believing in someone who everyone said would be there for me at my side in my toughest times , but never seemed to be. I picked this word because I now realize that he is here for me , alway has been and always will. for he was just a few steps behind me and I never realized that, because I was too afraid of looking back and seeing something that had already ruined me.
knowing this, my faith has grown each and everyday and even though it just babysteps, its still progress. I think that going back into my religion is going to help me stay closer to God and closer to myself , because I believe i am stronger with God and that though not everything is possible I know im not alone in any decision I make. Even though at times my faith will crumble at times I'll do my best to stay faithful to my religion and look for ways to get to fully understand what my faith is.

  57. Optimism- This year I want to focus on being optimistic in all situations that I am faced with. I have learned in previous years that life throws curve balls at you at random times, and instead of letting it get to me, I want to be happy. I'm going to strive to be a "good finder" when it comes to tough situations. Even though I may be put through difficult times in the process, I want to learn to look at the best possible outcome. I think being an optimistic person will help better my life.

  58. Time- I chose time because this year I need to focus on time. I need to turn my assignments in on time and not wait up until the week it is due to do them. I also need to manage my time better, school and homework comes first, then video games. I need to be on time, not miss anything. I also want to help people who have time management issues. That is why I chose the word time, to manage my time better.

  59. Strive - I want to work to be the best that I can be in all things that I do. Although I may not be the best at a subject, sport, or other activity, I want it to be obvious that I'm working my hardest in everything that I am doing, whether it is a basic task or a test in class.

  60. Motivation-
I chose this word because I'm a lazy, unmotivated, procrastinator. I mean, I have goals; dont get me wrong. It just so happens that in past experiences, something I turned in last second has gotten a better grade than something I have taken my time on. Whenever I get a bad grade on something I took my time on I get unmotivated. I don't want that anymore. I want to just be able to get off my butt and do something, anything. Wether it comes to homework, exercise, or just joing a club. I want to be more motivated, and I'm trying hard to be. :)

  61. Dedication
To describe my New Year’s resolution I chose dedication because by the end I want to verbal to my dream college. For this to happen I'm going to need to be dedicated to my school work by getting good grades and working hard. I will also need to stay dedicated to my athletics by putting in the time and effort. If I don't stay dedicated then how do I plan on fulfilling my goal of Verbalizing?

  62. Learn
This is the word I've chosen because I want to, well you know, learn. I want to learn how to make better decisions, maybe pick up another musical instrument, and mostly just be happy. To start, I guess I make a few good decisions here and there, but the world would probably be a better place if I kept the stupid ones to myself. Secondly, learning another musical instrument would be nice. I'll be recording hit records in no time haha jk. Lastly, to be happy I'm just going to be myself and not give a crap what people think of me because that's how I roll.

  63. Work
I chose the word "work" for my resolution this year. Since there are so many things that I wish to do this year, I want to learn how to work better so that I can get them done. For example, I want to improve at playing the flute, and I want to start running again, and I want to do better in school, so I have to work better so that I can accomplish these goals.

  64. Focus- The reason I choose "focus" to be my word is I kind of lack it most of the time. I could be talking about one thing one second then be off on another thing the next. At times I'll be doing homework, and I'd need to focus, but social media keeps me distracted. I need the focus to keep on task with what I am doing at the time. My grades right now in some classes are showing my lack of focus as well. So to fix my grades, I need to focus.

  65. My word of the year is Motivation. Motivation to do well in school, bowling, and exercising! I really put no effort into school this first semester, and my grades definitely show it. Second semester I'm moving to Online school so I'm gonna make that a good rest of the school year. Bowling, I'm working my butt off this year and practicing about 5 times a week, and even with exercising and eating better, Motivation is a key thing.

  66. My word for this year is Diligence. I feel like I could have had a much easier, more lenient year if I would've done my work first and foremost, rather than procrastinate and not complete it until the last second. In hindsight, I am doing this on the 21st, the last day before finals. So, I am already not doing too well. Hopefully, second semester will be better for me and I will start being a better, more diligent student.

  67. Risks

My fears have held me back a lot in life. This year, I want to make more of an effort to change that. I want to take risks and go on adventures; do things that give the that amazing, on top of the world feeling. I want a life full of crazy stories , not a life of "what if"s when all I really did was sit in the background and watch the people who actually did do things.

  68. Persevere

When things don't go as I had hoped or planned, I sometimes consider giving up and quitting when all I need is a break and to return with a fresh look. I want to get the thought of quitting out of my mind and gear my thoughts towards persevering through whatever it is that frustrates me.

  69. Strength

Strength has always been a key role in my life. By choosing strength as my word for this year, I do not mean physical strength. Physical strength can overcome a lot of barriers, but not as well as mental strength. Mental strength is what gets us through tough situations in our life; whether it be relationships, or merely getting through a tough practice. Some situations in life could be resolved by physical strength, but mental strength is what keeps every individual going.

  70. Move. The one word that would be capable of summing up my goals for the future is move. I want to move more in a lot of different ways, not just physically. I want to be able to move more when I play my cello, so that I can improve my playing skills and to better feel the music, perhaps even embrace it, if that makes sense. I want to move more in regards to my life. I want to take more chances, go more places, those sort of things. I would also like to move quicker when it comes to doing my homework and chores. Move. For such a simple word, it means a lot to me.

  71. Prioritize-

I need to prioritize my goals and responsibilities. Right now, I've got a full plate of projects and no time to complete them all on deadline. I want to establish what I need to set forth and a higher priority in order to accomplish these. Honestly, comparatively to other individuals, I'm pretty disorganized, and prioritizing projects would make my stress levels go down immensely.

Acceptance. A lot of situations I've been in this past year and a half have left me with the feeling of regret, frustration, and have developed a little bit of hatred in me for life sometimes. I'm tired of focusing on all the situations that have gone bad in my life and start focusing on all the opportunities that can go right for me, and I think the first step to finding some peace of mind is to accept the fact that some things are unchangeable. There will be times when my grades aren't as good as they were, friends become strangers, family isn't as close as they once were, or my self-esteem is at an all time low, but accepting that everything in life happens for a reason and that there is far better things in life ahead of us is the start to internal happiness.

  73. Perfection – I choose this word because I want to have the things I complete be as perfect as possible. Many times when start a project it doesn't turn out the way I want it to. I already spend lots of time on projects, but maybe I just need to put in a few extra minutes to make it the best it can be. Along with perfection comes completion. Sometimes my projects never get done because I didn't take enough time to do a certain step right. Then things get complicated and I lose heart. Hopefully, working on perfection will allow me to get more things done this year.
